Another recipe that I collected when I was in high school. I usually make these at Christmas time because they are very easy and different from many cookies. I don't think anyone has ever guessed that they contain dates.

to Angel Flake Cookies Recipes

Angel flake cookies are a classic cookie recipe that has been around for decades. These cookies are light and fluffy, with a delicate texture that melts in your mouth. They are made with simple ingredients that most people already have in their pantry.

The History of Angel Flake Cookies

The origin of angel flake cookies is somewhat of a mystery. However, it is believed that these cookies were inspired by angel food cake, which has a similar light and airy texture. Angel food cake became popular in the early 1900s, and by the 1920s, recipes for angel flake cookies began to appear in cookbooks and newspapers.

What Are Angel Flake Cookies?

Angel flake cookies are similar to meringue cookies, but they are softer and more delicate. They are made with a mixture of egg whites, sugar, and coconut flakes. The mixture is then spooned onto a baking sheet and baked until the cookies are lightly browned and crisp on the outside.

How to Make Angel Flake Cookies

To make angel flake cookies, you will need the following ingredients:
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups sweetened coconut flakes
Step 1: Preheat your oven and line a baking sheet with parchment paper
Before you start making your cookies, preheat your oven to 325°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
Step 2: Whip the egg whites
In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
Step 3: Add the sugar and vanilla extract
Slowly add the sugar and vanilla extract to the egg whites, and continue to whisk until the mixture is thick and glossy.
Step 4: Fold in the coconut flakes
Using a spatula, gently fold in the coconut flakes until they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Step 5: Spoon the mixture onto the baking sheet
Using a spoon or cookie scoop, drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Space them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading.
Step 6: Bake the cookies
Bake the cookies for 15-20 minutes, or until they are lightly browned and crisp on the outside. Remove them from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Variations on Angel Flake Cookies

There are many ways to customize angel flake cookies to suit your tastes. Here are some ideas:
  • Add chocolate chips or chopped nuts to the mixture for a crunchy texture.
  • Drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled cookies for an extra decadent treat.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture for cookies that are colorful and fun.
  • Use almond extract or lemon extract instead of vanilla extract for a different flavor profile.

In Conclusion

Angel flake cookies are a timeless favorite for many. They are airy and delicate in texture, with a slightly sweet flavor that melts in your mouth. These cookies are perfect for any occasion, whether it's for Christmas or just a regular family get-together. However, making these cookies takes a bit of finesse. In this article, we'll be sharing valuable tips to make the perfect angel flake cookies recipes that are sure to impress.

Tip #1: Use the Right Ingredients

The first thing you need to ensure when making angel flake cookies is that you are using the right ingredients. These cookies require a specific type of flour, which is cake flour. Cake flour has a lower protein content than all-purpose flour, making it lighter and resulting in a more delicate texture for your cookies. You will also need baking powder, salt, sugar, egg whites, vanilla extract, and cream of tartar. Make sure that all your ingredients are fresh, especially the baking powder and cream of tartar, as these are responsible for the cookies' rise.

Tip #2: Prep Your Kitchen and Tools

When making angel flake cookies, as with any baking, a clean kitchen and tools are a must. Always start by cleaning your kitchen and getting out all the tools you need, such as a stand mixer or handheld mixer, baking sheet, and parchment paper or silicone baking mat. You should also make sure that your mixing bowl and beaters are completely clean and free of any oil or grease. This will help ensure that your egg whites whip up to their full potential.

Tip #3: Whip the Egg Whites to Stiff Peaks

One of the most crucial steps in making angel flake cookies is whipping the egg whites to stiff peaks. This means that when you lift your beaters from the mixture, the egg white peak stands up and does not fall over. To achieve stiff peaks, take your time and start beating your egg whites slowly, increasing it gradually to high speed. Add cream of tartar at this stage, which will give them more structure and help them whip up faster. It's essential not to add sugar to the egg whites until they have started forming soft peaks. Adding sugar too soon can weigh down the egg whites, which will not result in the desired texture.

Tip #4: Fold in the Flour Mixture Gently

Once you have whipped the egg whites to stiff peaks, it's time to fold in the flour mixture gently. It's important to do this with a light hand, ensuring that you don't deflate the egg whites too much. You can sift the flour mixture into the egg whites and use a rubber spatula to fold it in. Make sure to scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl to ensure that there are no pockets of flour left behind.

Tip#5: Pipe the Cookies on Parchment Paper or Silicone Baking Mats

Angel flake cookies are traditionally piped onto parchment paper or silicone baking mats using a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. This creates the signature shape of the cookies with their ridges and valleys. When piping the cookies, try to make them as uniform as possible in size and shape. Leave space between the cookies, as they will spread slightly during baking.

Tip #6: Let the Cookies Cool Completely Before Storing

Once you have baked your angel flake cookies to the perfect golden brown, make sure to let them cool completely before storing them. This will help them to hold their shape and keep their delicate texture. Store your cookies in an airtight container or glass jar with a tight lid. You can also add a slice of bread to the container to help keep them soft and fresh for a more extended period.

Conclusion

Making angel flake cookies is a delicate process, but with the right ingredients, tools, and techniques, anyone can create these light and airy treats. By using cake flour, whipping the egg whites to stiff peaks, folding in the flour mixture gently, piping the cookies, and letting them cool completely before storing them, your angel flake cookies will turn out perfect and delicious.
