THE BEST CHILI

The Best Chili image

There are a thousand ways to make chili, but this is the quintessential, totally classic version. We used ground beef, kidney beans and the perfect blend of spices. You can slather it on hot dogs and burgers or serve it as a dip, but it can surely stand on its own. Chances are, you have everything you need right in your pantry. Top it with your favorite garnishes and serve with plenty of tortilla chips.

Time 1h30m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 16

1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 pound ground beef chuck, preferably coarse grind (see Cook's Note)
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons tomato paste
1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth
One 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes, crushed
Two 15.5-ounce cans kidney beans, undrained
Sour cream, shredded Cheddar and sliced scallions, for serving
Tortilla chips, for serving

Steps:

  • Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until just browned, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.
  • Reduce the heat to medium and add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly golden, about 10 minutes.
  • Add the jalapeno and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  • Add the chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne, 1/2 teaspoon salt and the tomato paste. Cook, stirring frequently, until coated and fragrant, about 1 minute.
  • Stir in the beef broth and crushed tomatoes and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in the cooked ground beef and any accumulated liquid, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer the chili, partially covered, until the beef is tender and the sauce is slightly thickened, about 30 minutes.
  • Stir in the beans and their liquid and simmer uncovered until the beans are softened and the chili is thickened, about 30 minutes more. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Top with sour cream, Cheddar and scallions. Serve with tortilla chips.

Andy's chili recipes are popular all over the world because of their unique taste and flavor. Since chili is a popular dish, there are various methods and approaches to make it. However, Andy's chili recipe has stood the test of time due to its simplicity, taste, and ability to win the hearts of chili lovers. In the following discussion, we will provide valuable tips on how to make Andy's chili recipe even better.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Ingredients

The quality of ingredients makes a significant difference in the taste and flavor of the chili. Therefore, it is crucial to choose the best possible ingredients. For instance, when selecting ground beef, go for organic beef with a higher fat content ratio. Fat is needed to boost the flavor and create a tender texture. Onions are an essential ingredient in chili. Use fresh onions instead of dehydrated onions. Fresh onions have a milder taste and add more flavor to the chili. In addition, use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder. Fresh garlic has a vibrant flavor that can't be matched by the powder form.

Tip 2: Use the Right Chili Beans

Chili beans come in many types, such as kidney beans, pinto beans, and black beans. Though all beans are healthy, there are specific chili bean types that would work excellently with Andy's chili recipe. For instance, kidney beans have a slightly firm texture and a mild taste that complements the spices in the chili. Pinto beans, on the other hand, have a creamier texture and a slightly sweet taste compared to kidney beans. However, when selecting chili beans, it's essential to select canned beans that are free from preservatives and have low salt content.

Tip 3: Use the Right Spices

The secret behind Andy's chili recipe lies in the selection of spices. Here are some of the essential spices you will need to make a flavorful chili:

Chili Powder: Chili powder is a blend of spices such as cumin, oregano, and garlic. Choose a good-quality chili powder that is slightly spicy but not hot.

Cumin: Cumin has an earthy taste that complements the chili powder. Add a few teaspoons of cumin to bring out the flavor of the chili.

Paprika: Paprika adds a beautiful red color to the chili while having a mild, slightly sweet taste. Pick up a good-quality paprika to give your chili the color and flavor it deserves.

Cayenne pepper: Cayenne pepper is a hot spice that varies in heat intensity, depending on the amount used. Be careful not to overdo it with cayenne pepper, as it can overpower the other spices in the chili.

Salt And Pepper: While salt brings out the flavor of the other spices and ingredients, pepper adds a slight heat and an earthy flavor to the chili.

Tip 4: Simmer Time

When cooking Andy's chili recipe, the simmer time is crucial. The longer the chili simmers, the better the flavor and texture. Be sure to cook your chili at a low temperature to allow the flavors to meld together. Simmering chili for about 45 minutes to an hour will allow the flavors to blend completely. If you have time, consider cooking it for up to two hours. Any more than two hours will make the beans too mushy, which can be unpleasant to the texture of the chili.

Tip 5: Garnish the Chili

Garnishing is essential when serving chili. It adds a pop of color and texture to the dish, and it's a great way to make your chili look more appealing. Some of the best chili toppings include sour cream, shredded cheese, diced onions, pickled jalapenos, and fresh cilantro. Experiment with different toppings to find the best combination that works for you.

Conclusion

In summary, making Andy's chili recipe can be a simple process if you follow these valuable tips. The quality of the ingredients, the spices used, the simmer time, and the garnishes all contribute to the overall flavor and texture of the chili. By choosing the best ingredients, spicing it up correctly, simmering it at the right temperature, and garnishing it with delicious toppings, you can ensure that your chili will be a crowd-pleaser every time.
