1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
2 cups milk
3 eggs
1 cup oil (or 1/2 cup oil, 1/2 cup applesauce)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 (5 1/8 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding
1 cup raisins (optional)
1 cup nuts, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • Dissolve yeast in small amount of warm water.
  • Mix all ingredients together in a gallon-size ziploc bag. This is day one.
  • Day 1 - Do nothing (This is the day you receive your starter, see date on your bag.).
  • Day 2 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 3 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 4 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 5 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 6 - Add to the bag: 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk - Mush the bag.
  • Day 7 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 8 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 9 - Mush the bag.
  • Day 10 - Follow the instructions below:.
  • Pour entire contents of the bag into a large non-metal bowl.
  • For 4 starters: Add 1-1/2 cups flour, 1-1/2 cups sugar, 1-1/2 cups milk.
  • For 1 starter: Add ½ cup flour, ½ cup sugar, ½ milk (Tip: Starter will form lumps - add flour and sugar only and stir until smooth then add milk gradually (it will take a lot of stirring.).
  • Label four (or one), one-gallon Ziploc bags with "Day 1" and the date. Fill each of these bags with one cup of the mixture. These are starters for you to pass onto your friends and/or co-workers. If you'd like, you may keep one for yourself. Note: If you keep a starter bag for yourself, you will be baking bread every 10th day. If you don't keep one for yourself, you will have to wait until you receive another starter bag from a friend, as the Amish are the only ones who know how to create a starter. After filling the bags, there will be 1-1/2 cups of batter remaining.
  • Preheat the oven to 325'.
  • To the remaining batter add 3 eggs, 1-1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 cup oil (or ½ oil & ½ applesauce), ½ tsp baking soda, ½ cup milk, ½ tsp vanilla, 1 cup sugar, 2 cups flour, ½ tsp salt, 1 large box vanilla instant pudding, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 cup raisins (optional), 1 cup chopped nuts (optional).
  • Note: It is easier to mix if you combine the dry ingredients (except for sugar and pudding) in another bowl then add it slowly to the batter.
  • Grease bottom and sides of 2 large loaf pans or spray with Pam. Mix ½ cup sugar and 1-1/2 tsp cinnamon in a small bowl. Dust the insides of each of the pans with half of the mixture, making sure to cover the bottom and sides well.
  • Pour batter evenly into the 2 pans and sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture over top of the batter.
  • Bake for approximately 1 hour (until toothpick comes out clean.) Cool until the bread loosens from the pan easily. Turn onto serving dish. May be served warm or cold. Enjoy.

Quick Amish Friendship Bread or Muffins (No Starter Required) image

I love this bread and I had a craving for it, but didn't want to wait the month it took for the starter to be ready, so, I modified it a bit. It might not be quite as tasty as the original, but it's great if you want it in a hurry! I like to use butterscotch pudding for a different, but really nice flavor! Hope you enjoy!

Day 10 again add one cup of each, Milk (@ room temp), sugar, & all purpose flour. Mix in well, leaving no lumps. Then: remove one cup of starter to make your bread, add one cup to a gallon size zip lock bag, do this 3 times to total 3 gallon size bags with one cup of starter. you should have one cup remaining in container for yourself. Give the remaining starters to friends along with this recipe. (This is considered day one again) & repeat the process with remaining cup to keep starter going. (Starter can be stored in refrigerator for future use. If this is done, it is good for up to 2 weeks, then it will need to be fed again to re-start the process.)
  • 2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Prepare two (2) 9x5 bread pans by greasing well with non-stick cooking spray. Sprinkle with sugar or cinnamon-sugar mixture. Set aside.
  • 3. To Make the Friendship Bread: In a mixer, add 1 cup of fermented starter, vegetable oil (or applesauce), milk, sugar, vanilla, & eggs. Mix well
  • 4. In a separate bowl, add flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, & pudding mix (optional). Blend well & add to starter mixture.
  • 5. Pour half the mixture in one bread pan, and the other half in second bread pan. Bake @ 325 degrees F for one hour or until cake tester inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  • 6. This is what it looks like :) Note: you can divide into 4 small loaves to give as gifts or use for bake sales. My kids love to make and give as Christmas gifts along with a starter to their teachers, friends' parents, or others, for holidays!! You can also add one (1) cup of chopped nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, or your favorite treat to the batter to make it special! :)

Feel free to add nuts, raisins, cranberries, cinnamon, vanilla, etc. I make my starter with whole wheat flour, so I go ahead and use cake flour in this recipe to lighten it up a bit. I also use carrot baby food in place of the applesauce to healthify it a bit more :)

  • After the starter has fermented for 10 days, you're ready to begin the next 10 days.
  • Make sure you don't miss a day! Mixture might become bubbly, and that's okay.
  • Day 1: Begin or receive starter.
  • Day 2: Stir.
  • Day 3: Stir.
  • Day 4: Stir.
  • Day 5: Add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk.
  • Day 6: Stir.
  • Day 7: Stir.
  • Day 8: Do nothing.
  • Day 9: Do nothing.
  • Day 10: Add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk.
  • Bread:.
  • After all 10 days are completed, put 1 cup of the starter in four separate containers.
  • Give three to your friends and keep one for yourself to bake with later. You can give the starters in Ziplock bags, but make sure your friends "burp" the bag each day to keep excess air out.
  • When you give the starter to them, they're ready to begin the Day 1 instructions immediately.
  • Next, when you're ready to bake the bread, add the Bread ingredients to 1 cup of the starter.
  • Add and beat the bread ingredients by hand until well blended. If desired, add one cup raisins, nuts or chocolate chips.
  • Grease two loaf pans and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 325 degrees for one hour or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.
  • Variations:.
  • If you'd like to try a different recipe, replace the cinnamon and vanilla pudding with one of the following: poppy seeds and lemon pudding, chocolate pudding and mini chocolate chips or banana pudding and chopped walnuts.
  • Enjoy!
  • Johnski.

MULTIGRAIN BREAD FOR ABM (AMISH FRIENDSHIP STARTER)

Multigrain Bread for Abm (Amish Friendship Starter) image

I am always making up new recipes to use up my endless supply of Amish Friendship Bread Starter. This is a nice and hearty multigrain bread. I actually used 1/2 cup of Katzen's recipe #384672. . .that being said, I have written this recipe assuming you don't have a bucket of it in the pantry (as I do). Also feel free to sub out any of the grains for what you have on hand, just make sure it totals 8 T (i.e. rolled oats, quinoa, or increase amounts of the other ingredients). This makes about a 2 lb loaf.

Valuable Tips for Creating Perfect Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipes

If you are a bread lover, you must have heard of the famous Amish Friendship Bread. This bread is typically made with a sourdough starter that you need to prepare well in advance. The starter recipe is pretty simple to make once you get the hang of it. However, we have some valuable tips that will help you create a perfect Amish Friendship Bread starter recipe that will make your bread turn out perfect every time.
1. Use the Right Flour
Amish Friendship Bread starter recipe is made with flour, sugar, and yeast. But it is essential to use the right kind of flour in this recipe. All-purpose flour is typically used to make the Amish Friendship Bread starter. However, ensure that the flour you use is fresh and has not been in your pantry for too long. Old flour can turn sour or rancid, which will affect the taste and texture of your bread. You can also use whole wheat flour or bread flour, but the texture of your bread may be slightly different from the original recipe.
2. Keep Your Starter in a Warm Place
Once you have made the Amish Friendship Bread starter recipe, you need to keep it in a warm place to allow the yeast to grow. It is vital to keep the starter at a temperature between 68-82°F, or the yeast will not grow correctly. You can keep your starter in a warm place, such as an oven with the light turned on or a pantry. You can also cover your starter with a towel or plastic wrap to retain the heat.
3. Feed Your Starter Regularly
Feeding your starter regularly is crucial in maintaining a healthy and active starter. The starter needs to be fed with flour and sugar every four to five days. You can also add milk or yogurt to the starter to add more moisture. When feeding your starter, ensure that you discard some of the starter before adding more ingredients. This will ensure that your starter does not become too large and unmanageable.
4. Use High-Quality Ingredients
The quality of the ingredients you use will significantly affect the taste and texture of your Amish Friendship Bread. Ensure that you use high-quality ingredients, especially the yeast, sugar, and flour, for the best results. You can also add different ingredients to the starter to enhance the flavor of your bread, such as cinnamon, vanilla extract, and citrus zest.
5. Mix the Ingredients with Care
When mixing the ingredients for your Amish Friendship Bread starter recipe, it is essential to mix them carefully. Use a wooden spoon or spatula, and avoid using metal utensils, as they can react with the ingredients and affect the flavor. Mix the ingredients until they are well combined, but do not overmix, or you may damage the structure of the bread.
6. Let Your Starter Rest
After feeding your starter, let it rest for a few hours before using it to make your bread. This will allow the yeast to grow and the flavors to develop. You can also keep a portion of the starter aside to use for future bread recipes. This will save you the trouble of making a new starter from scratch every time you want to bake bread.
7. Follow the Recipe Carefully
When making Amish Friendship Bread, following the recipe carefully is crucial. Each step in the process must be followed to the letter, especially when it comes to the rising and baking times. It is also essential to measure the ingredients accurately and use the right equipment to ensure the best results.
8. Store Your Bread Properly
Once your Amish Friendship Bread is baked, it is essential to store it correctly. Place the bread in a container with a tight-fitting lid or wrap it in plastic wrap. You can also freeze the bread for up to three months. If you want to keep your starter alive, feed it regularly and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. In Conclusion Creating the perfect Amish Friendship Bread starter recipe takes patience, but the results are worth it. With some valuable tips and the right ingredients, you can create a delicious and flavorful bread that everyone will love.
