medium 3 or 4 apples (3 cups)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup all purpose flour
1 egg
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp margarine, or butter, cut up into small "pats"

Making Amish apple crisp is one of the best ways to enjoy the classic flavors of fall. With the combination of sweet and tart apples, cinnamon, and oat crumble, it’s no wonder this dessert is a fan favorite. However, getting it right can be tricky, especially if you’re not familiar with the recipe. In this article, we’ll share some valuable tips that will make your Amish apple crisp a success.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Apples

One of the key ingredients in an Amish apple crisp is the apples. Choosing the right apples can make or break your dessert. Firstly, you’ll want to choose apples that are firm and tart. Granny Smith apples are a favorite for baking because they hold up well and don’t turn mushy when cooked. Another great option is Honeycrisp apples, which have a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. You can also use a combination of different apples to achieve a more complex flavor profile.

Tip #2: Prepare the Apples Properly

After you’ve chosen the right apples, it’s time to prepare them for the recipe. Start by peeling and coring the apples, and then slice them into bite-sized pieces. This will ensure that the apple pieces cook evenly and that every bite has an equal amount of apple and crumble.

Tip #3: Use the Right Spices

Spices are one of the most important ingredients in an Amish apple crisp recipe. The most popular choice is cinnamon, which adds warmth and depth to the dish. However, other spices like nutmeg, ginger, and allspice can also be used to enhance the flavor. The key is not to use too much of any one spice, as it can overpower the other flavors in the dish. A good rule of thumb is to use no more than a teaspoon of each spice.

Tip #4: Make a Crumbly Oat Topping

The crumbly oat topping is what sets Amish apple crisp apart from other apple desserts. To make the topping, you’ll need oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Mix these ingredients together until they form a crumbly texture, and then sprinkle the mixture over the apples. Make sure to cover the apples evenly and press down gently, so the crumble sticks together.

Tip #5: Bake at the Right Temperature

Baking at the right temperature is crucial to getting the perfect Amish apple crisp. The ideal temperature for baking is 375°F (190°C), and the cooking time is usually around 45 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft and tender.

Tip #6: Let it Rest

Once your Amish apple crisp is finished baking, it’s important to let it rest before serving. This allows the juices to settle and helps the crumble topping to set. Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. You can also cover it with foil and keep it at room temperature for up to two days.

Tip #7: Serve with Ice Cream

One of the best ways to enjoy Amish apple crisp is with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. The sweetness of the ice cream complements the tartness of the apples and adds a creamy texture to the dish. You can also serve it with whipped cream, caramel sauce, or chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.
Conclusion
In conclusion, making Amish apple crisp can be a delicious and rewarding dessert to share with family and friends. By choosing the right apples, preparing them properly, using the right spices, making a crumbly oat topping, baking at the right temperature, letting it rest, and serving with ice cream, you’ll have a dessert that’s sure to impress. Follow these valuable tips, and your Amish apple crisp will be a success.
