Categories     Appetizers

Time 8h5m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 20

1 lb cooked lean ground beef, or turkey
1 cup yellow onion, diced
2 cans diced tomato, with green chiles
1 can kidney bean, drained and rinsed
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons kosher salt
½ cup water
½ cup distilled white vinegar
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 cloves garlic
2 strips lime zest
6 jalapeñoes, sliced into 1/2 in (1 1/4 cm) round
1 bag frozen french fries, preferably crinkle cut
1 cup shredded mexican cheese blend
½ cup sour cream
4 scallions, thinly sliced
slow cooker

Steps:

  • Make the chili: In a slow cooker, combine the ground beef, onion, diced tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, chili powder, cumin, and salt. Cover and cook on low, stirring often, for about 6 hours, or until the onions are tender.
  • While the chili cooks, make the quick pickled jalapeños: In a small saucepan, combine the vinegar, water, salt, sugar, garlic, and lime zest. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer until the salt and sugar have dissolved, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the jalapeños to a medium heatproof bowl or large mason jar. Carefully pour the pickling liquid over the jalapeños, making sure they are fully submerged. Let the pickles cool to room temperature, about 1 hour. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or seal the jar and transfer to the refrigerator until ready to use. The pickled jalapeños will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Make the chili cheese fries: Preheat the oven according to the French fry package instructions.
  • Spread the French fries in an even layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 3 minutes less than the package instructs.
  • Remove the fries from the oven and top with several large scoops of chili. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top. Return to the oven for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted completely.
  • Dollop the sour cream on top of the chili cheese fries, then garnish with the scallions and pickled jalapeños. Let cool slightly, then serve directly off of the pan.
  • Enjoy!

American Chili Cheese Fries is a popular dish that is widely enjoyed across the world. It is a perfect appetizer for special occasions like game nights, movie nights, and parties. The combination of crispy fries, flavorful chili, and melted cheese is irresistible, making it an all-time favorite among people of all ages. With the right ingredients and cooking techniques, you can easily make this dish at home. In this article, we'll share some valuable tips that can help you make the perfect American Chili Cheese Fries.

Tip 1: Choosing the Right Potatoes

The first and foremost tip for making the perfect American Chili Cheese Fries is to choose the right potatoes. For this dish, you need potatoes that are high in starch and low in moisture. Russet potatoes are the best choice for making fries because of their high starch content. They are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, making them perfect for this dish.

Tip 2: Cutting the Potatoes

Once you have chosen the right potatoes, the next step is to cut them into perfect fries. The ideal size for fries is around 1/4 inch thick. You can use a mandoline or a sharp knife for cutting the potatoes. Also, make sure to cut the potatoes in uniform thickness to ensure even frying.

Tip 3: Preparing the Fries

After cutting the potatoes, the next step is to prepare the fries for frying. Rinse the potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch. Then, dry them thoroughly with paper towels to remove any moisture. Moisture is the enemy of crispy fries, and it can cause them to become soggy when frying. Therefore, it is important to remove as much moisture as possible before frying.

Tip 4: Frying the Fries

Now it's time to fry the fries. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the oil reaches the desired temperature, add the fries to the oil in small batches. Do not overcrowd the pot as this can lower the temperature of the oil and make the fries soggy. Fry the potatoes until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove the fries from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.

Tip 5: Making the Chili

While the fries are cooking, you can make the chili. The key to making delicious chili is to use high-quality ingredients. Use lean ground beef or turkey, fresh onions, garlic, and spices like cumin and chili powder for flavor. Cook the beef in a large pot until it is browned and cooked through. Then, add the onions and garlic, and sauté until they are soft and translucent. Add the spices and cook for a few minutes until fragrant. Finally, add the tomato sauce and beans and let the chili simmer for at least 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Tip 6: Assembling the Dish

Once the fries and chili are ready, it's time to assemble the dish. Place the fries on a large platter and spoon the chili over the top. Finally, sprinkle shredded cheese over the chili and fries. You can use any type of cheese that you prefer, but cheddar cheese is the most popular choice for this dish. If you like, you can also add other toppings like diced onions, chopped tomatoes, or jalapenos to add more flavor and texture to the dish.

Tip 7: Serving the Dish

American Chili Cheese Fries are best served hot and fresh. You can serve them as an appetizer or as a main course. They are perfect for game nights, parties, or family dinners. To make the dish more festive, you can serve it in individual serving bowls or on paper plates. You can also serve it with a side of sour cream or guacamole, which adds a cool and creamy contrast to the spicy and savory flavors of the dish.
Conclusion
Making American Chili Cheese Fries is easy with the right ingredients, tools, and cooking techniques. With these valuable tips, you can make the perfect American Chili Cheese Fries that are crispy, delicious, and flavorful. Whether you are hosting a game night, a party, or a family dinner, this dish is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
