Pecan pie is a classic Southern dessert that is perfect for any occasion. However, if you want to take it up a notch, you can make an ambrosia pecan pie – a delicious twist on the traditional pecan pie. Ambrosia pecan pie incorporates the flavors of sweet coconut, tangy pineapple, and crunchy pecans to create a dessert that is not only scrumptious but also visually appealing. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips on how to make the perfect ambrosia pecan pie.

Tip 1: Use the Right Pie Crust

The first step in making a delicious ambrosia pecan pie is to choose the right pie crust. You can either make your own pie crust or use a store-bought one. However, ensure that it is a good quality pie crust that is sturdy enough to hold the filling. For ambrosia pecan pie, a graham cracker pie crust pairs well with the coconut and pineapple flavors.
If you want to make your own pie crust, follow these steps:
  1. Mix 1 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of cold unsalted butter and mix until the mixture is crumbly.
  3. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  4. Roll out the dough into a circle that is about 1/8 inch thick and place the dough into a 9-inch pie dish.
  5. Trim the edges and chill the pie crust in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Tip 2: Toast the Pecans

Toasting the pecans gives them a richer flavor and a crunchier texture. Toasting also removes any bitterness that the pecans might have. To toast your pecans, follow these steps:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Spread the pecans in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake the pecans for about 8 to 10 minutes or until they are lightly browned and fragrant.
  4. Let the pecans cool before chopping them into small pieces.

Tip 3: Use Fresh Pineapple

Using fresh pineapple in your ambrosia pecan pie recipe is key to achieving a delicious and tangy flavor. Canned pineapple may be convenient, but fresh pineapple is much more flavorful and has a better texture. To choose a ripe pineapple, look for a fruit that has a sweet fragrance and is slightly soft to the touch.
Here’s how you can prepare fresh pineapple:
  1. Cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple.
  2. Stand the pineapple up and slice the skin off from top to bottom, following the curve of the fruit.
  3. Remove any remaining eyes (dark spots) from the pineapple using a paring knife.
  4. Quarter the pineapple lengthwise and remove the core from each quarter.
  5. Chop the remaining pineapple into small pieces.

Tip 4: Do Not Overmix the Filling

When it comes to making an ambrosia pecan pie, it’s important not to overmix the filling. Overmixing can cause the filling to become too dense and the texture will be tough rather than silky.
Here’s how you should mix the filling:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat 3 large eggs and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar until well combined.
  2. Stir in 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter, 1/2 cup of chopped toasted pecans, 1/2 cup of sweet shredded coconut, and 1/2 cup of chopped fresh pineapple.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and mix until just combined.

Tip 5: Bake the Pie Correctly

Baking an ambrosia pecan pie to perfection is critical for achieving a delicious end product. Here are some tips to ensure that your ambrosia pecan pie is cooked correctly:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Place your prepared pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. Pour the filling into the pie crust and smooth the surface.
  4. Bake the pie for 45 to 50 minutes or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  5. Cool the pie on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.

Conclusion

Making an ambrosia pecan pie may seem daunting at first, but with these valuable tips, you’ll be able to create a dessert that is sure to impress your friends and family. Remember to choose the right pie crust, toast the pecans, use fresh pineapple, avoid overmixing the filling, and bake the pie correctly. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to making an ambrosia pecan pie that is not only delicious but also visually appealing.
