Crab cakes are a staple in many seafood restaurants, but have you ever considered adding goat cheese to your recipe? Goat cheese adds a tangy and creamy flavor to the cakes and makes them even more delicious. With a little bit of practice and a few valuable tips, you can make amazing goat cheese crab cakes that are perfect for entertaining or a special occasion.

Selecting the Right Crab Meat

When it comes to crab cakes, the type of crab meat you choose is critical. You can either use lump crab meat, which is the most expensive and has larger chunks of meat, or you can use backfin crab meat, which is less expensive and has smaller pieces. Both options are great, but you need to ensure that the crab meat is fresh and not canned.

Adding the Cheese

The goat cheese is the star ingredient of this recipe, and you need to add just the right amount, neither too much nor too little. You can either add it to the crab meat mixture or incorporate it as a topping. If you add it to the mixture, make sure it is at room temperature to ensure it blends well. You can also add other types of cheese, including feta or blue cheese, to add more depth of flavor.

Using the Right Binders

When making crab cakes, you need to use binders to hold the cakes together. You can use eggs, mayo, bread crumbs, crackers, or a combination of these ingredients. Using a binder ensures that the cakes do not fall apart when frying or baking. You can experiment with different binders to find the one that works best for you.

Seasoning the Crab Meat

Crab meat has a delicate flavor, and you want to ensure that you do not overpower it with too many spices or herbs. The best way to season crab meat is to use a combination of Old Bay seasoning, salt, and pepper. You can also add some chopped parsley or dill for a fresh taste. Remember to taste the mixture before forming the cakes.

Forming the Cakes

To form the crab cakes, you need to use your hands to shape them into patties. It is essential to ensure that the cakes are not too thick, as they will take longer to cook and may not cook through properly. You can place the cakes in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour to ensure that they hold their shape when cooking.

Frying or Baking the Cakes

You can either fry or bake the crab cakes, depending on your preference. To fry the cakes, heat up some oil in a pan and fry the cakes for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are golden brown. To bake the cakes, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake the cakes for 10-12 minutes until they are heated through and crispy on top.

Serving Suggestions

Goat cheese crab cakes are delicious on their own or served with a side salad or some vegetables. You can also serve them with a homemade sauce or dressing, such as aioli, tartar sauce, or a lemon-dill sauce. Remember to garnish with some chopped parsley or dill to add some color and freshness to the dish.
Conclusion
Adding goat cheese to your crab cakes recipe is an easy way to take your dish to the next level. With the right ingredients, seasoning, and cooking techniques, you can create amazing goat cheese crab cakes that are sure to impress your guests. Remember to use fresh crab meat, the right binders, and to season the mixture carefully. Whether you fry or bake the cakes, they are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
