ALMOST KFC COLESLAW

Almost Kfc Coleslaw image

When my dad was living, he loved KFC coleslaw and he swore that this was just like it or better. Never had it side by side to taste test it but this is a very good version of it.

Categories     Vegetable

Time 30m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 head cabbage
1 cup baby carrots
1/4 cup onion
1/2 green bell pepper
1 1/2 cups Miracle Whip
1/4 cup sugar
milk, enough to make mixture creamy
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste
1/2-1 teaspoon celery seed, to desired taste

Steps:

  • Put cabbage, carrots and bell pepper through food processor. Or you can grate with a hand grater.
  • Grate onion to ensure you have exactly 1/4 c onion. Any more onion and it will ruin the whole batch.
  • Place in a large bowl.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together miracle whip, salt, pepper, celery seed, sugar and enough milk to make mixture creamy.
  • Pour over cabbage mixture.
  • Best if put in fridge to allow the ingredients to mix together.
  • NOTE: real mayo don't work as well with this recipe.

  • Salt
  • Pepper

Techniques

The techniques used in making "almost KFC coleslaw recipes" help to achieve the desired results. Some of the techniques include:
  • Shredding the Cabbage and Carrots: The cabbage and carrots should be shredded finely to achieve a similar texture to the original recipe. This can be done using a food processor or a grater.
  • Soaking the Cabbage and Carrots: Soaking the cabbage and carrots in salt water helps to soften them and draw out excess liquid. This step is essential in ensuring that the coleslaw does not become too watery.
  • Mixing the Ingredients: The dressing ingredients (mayonnaise, buttermilk, sugar, vinegar, salt, and pepper) should be mixed thoroughly until smooth. The cabbage and carrots should then be added and mixed until evenly coated.

Coleslaw is a refreshing, versatile and delicious side dish that complements various main courses. While there are different types of coleslaw recipes that you can try, one of the most popular and beloved is KFC coleslaw. The great news is that you can enjoy the same flavors of KFC coleslaw by making an "almost KFC coleslaw recipe" at home. Here are valuable tips to help you make the perfect "almost KFC coleslaw recipe."

Tip #1: Get the right ingredients

To make the perfect "almost KFC coleslaw recipe", you will need to get the right ingredients. Instead of buying a pre-made coleslaw mix, you should use fresh cabbage and carrots. Napa cabbage is the best choice for this recipe because it is delicate, sweet, and tender. You can also use green cabbage or red cabbage depending on your preference. For the dressing, you will need the following ingredients:
  • Mayonnaise
  • Buttermilk
  • Sugar
  • White vinegar
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt

Tip #2: Shred the cabbage thinly

To achieve the classic KFC coleslaw texture, you need to shred the cabbage thinly. This approach gives the coleslaw a pleasing crunch that blends perfectly with the creaminess of the dressing. Use a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer to shred the cabbage thinly. Ensure that the cabbage is evenly shredded to prevent chunks that could affect the texture of the coleslaw.

Tip #3: Grate the carrots

Grating the carrots is the best way to ensure that they blend well with the shredded cabbage. You can use a handheld grater, a box grater or a food processor to grate the carrots. Choose the method that works best for you depending on the tools you have at your disposal. Ensure that the grated carrots are not too thick or too thin.

Tip #4: Let the coleslaw sit in the fridge

After mixing the coleslaw dressing with the cabbage and carrots, it is essential to let the coleslaw sit in the fridge for at least an hour. This process allows the flavors to combine and gives the cabbage time to soften slightly. The coleslaw will also become creamier with time, which is what you want if you're going for the classic KFC coleslaw taste.

Tip #5: Experiment with the dressing

The dressing is the most critical component of any coleslaw recipe. However, you don't have to stick to the traditional recipe if you don't want to. You can add different spices, herbs or other ingredients to the dressing to come up with a coleslaw version that suits your preferences. For example, you can add some celery seeds for an extra kick or swap the white vinegar for apple cider vinegar for a slightly tangier taste.

Tip #6: Use a measuring cup

The dressing ingredients for the "almost KFC coleslaw recipe" are pretty straightforward, but it is crucial to use precise measurements to get the taste right. Use a measuring cup to measure the mayonnaise, buttermilk, sugar, vinegar, and lemon juice. This approach ensures that you get the correct balance of flavors and prevents mistakes that could ruin the taste of the coleslaw.

Tip #7: Don't overmix the coleslaw

When mixing the dressing with the cabbage and carrots, it is essential to avoid overmixing. Overmixing results in a mushy coleslaw, which is not what you want. Instead, mix the ingredients lightly, folding the dressing over the cabbage and carrots until they are evenly coated. This approach ensures that the coleslaw remains crunchy and fresh.

Tip #8: Add the dressing gradually

When adding the dressing to the cabbage and carrots, it is crucial to do it gradually. Don't add all the dressing at once. This approach makes it easier to control the amount of dressing you use, ensuring that the coleslaw is not too wet or too dry. It's better to start with a smaller amount of dressing and add more as needed until you achieve the desired consistency.

Tip #9: Use airtight containers

After making the "almost KFC coleslaw recipe," it is essential to store it correctly to maintain its flavor and texture. Use airtight containers to store the coleslaw in the fridge. This approach prevents the coleslaw from drying out or absorbing flavors from other items in the fridge. You can use glass or plastic containers for storage.

Tip #10: Serve the coleslaw cold

Finally, it is crucial to serve the "almost KFC coleslaw recipe" cold. This approach helps to enhance the flavors of the coleslaw and ensures that it remains fresh and crunchy. You can serve the coleslaw alongside various main courses such as fried chicken, burgers, or grilled meats. You can also use it as a topping for hot dogs or sandwiches.

Conclusion

Making an "almost KFC coleslaw recipe" is easy and straightforward if you follow the above valuable tips. Remember to use fresh cabbage and carrots, shred the cabbage thinly, grate the carrots, and let the coleslaw sit in the fridge for at least an hour. You can experiment with the dressing and use a measuring cup to ensure precise measurements. Don't overmix the coleslaw and add the dressing gradually. Use airtight containers for storage and serve the coleslaw cold. With these tips, you can make coleslaw that is as tasty as the KFC version.
