ALMOND BUTTER FINGERS

Almond Butter Fingers image

From "The Joy Of Cookies" by Sharon Tyler Herbst. This recipe reads "These buttery, crumbly, nut-coated cookies are the perfect accompaniment for coffee." Passive time includes 15 minutes cooling time in the pan, but there is an additional cooling period after that as well.

Time 1h15m

Yield 40 bars, 40 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg, separated
3/4 teaspoon almond extract

In fact, there are many variations of these recipes that have different ingredients and flavors depending on the region and cultural background.

Ingredients

The base ingredients for traditional almond fingers recipes include almonds, flour, sugar, egg whites, vanilla extract, and almond extract. These ingredients are mixed together to make a dough that is then shaped into long fingers and baked to perfection.
Modern Variations
In recent years, there has been an increase in almond finger recipes that incorporate different ingredients to enhance the flavors and textures of the dessert. One popular variation is the addition of chocolate chips or cocoa powder to create a chocolate almond finger recipe. Another popular variation is the incorporation of dried fruits such as cherries, cranberries, and raisins. The addition of these ingredients adds a touch of sweetness and a unique texture to the almond fingers.
Regional Variations
Another way that almond finger recipes differ is by region. These desserts have been popular all over Europe, Asia, and the Middle East for centuries, leading to the creation of numerous unique variations of the recipe. In Italy, for example, almond finger recipes often include the addition of lemon zest, which adds a bright, citrus flavor to the dessert. In Spain and Latin America, sweetened condensed milk is often added to the recipe to create a more decadent and rich flavor. In Japan, almond fingers are known as "amondokoro" and are typically made with a mixture of glutinous rice flour, almond paste, and sugar.

Cultural Significance

Almond fingers have a long history that is deeply rooted in the traditional culinary practices of many cultures. In the Middle East, for instance, almond fingers are known as "ghraybeh," and they are often served during special occasions such as weddings and Ramadan. In Italy, almond fingers are a popular dessert during Christmas and Easter celebrations.

In many cultures, almond fingers are also associated with symbols of luck and prosperity. For instance, in Greece, almond fingers are often given to brides as a symbol of good luck for their future marriage. Similarly, in the Middle East, almonds are considered symbols of good fortune and are often given as gifts during weddings and other significant celebrations.
Religious Practices
Almond fingers also hold significant religious significance in many cultures. In Christian traditions, these desserts are often served during lent as a way to break fast. In Jewish culture, almond fingers are known as "mandelbrot," and they are often served during Hanukkah and other Jewish holidays.

Conclusion

While the traditional ingredients of almond fingers include almonds, flour, sugar, egg whites, vanilla extract, and almond extract, there are many variations of this recipe that have been created over the years. Almond fingers are a popular dessert that is enjoyed by many people around the world. They are easy to make, delicious, and can be enjoyed at any time of the day. If you want to prepare the perfect almond fingers, then there are a few tips that you should keep in mind.

Tip 1: Use High-Quality Almonds

The flavor of your almond fingers recipe will depend greatly on the quality of the almonds that you use. Therefore, it is essential to select high-quality almonds that are fresh and flavorful. It is recommended to use blanched almonds, which have the skins removed, to achieve a smooth texture and better flavors.

Tip 2: Use the Right Ratio of Ingredients

When making almond fingers, it is essential to use the right ratio of ingredients to achieve the perfect consistency and flavor. Generally, a recipe that combines equal amounts of almonds, sugar, and butter will help to achieve the best results. The ratio of ingredients may vary depending on the recipe you choose, but it is best to follow the measurements closely.

Tip 3: Use a Food Processor

A food processor is an excellent tool to use when making almond fingers. It will help to ensure that the ingredients are properly mixed and that the texture is smooth and even. You can use a food processor to chop the almonds into small pieces or process them into a fine powder.

Tip 4: Use High-Quality Butter

Butter is a critical ingredient in almond fingers recipes because it provides the necessary fat for the recipe. It is essential to use high-quality butter that is fresh and unsalted. This will help to enhance the flavor of your recipe and give it a nice, creamy texture.

Tip 5: Chill the Dough

After mixing all the ingredients, it is essential to chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before shaping the almond fingers. This will help to firm up the dough and make it easier to handle when shaping the fingers. Chilling the dough is particularly necessary if you are using a recipe that requires you to roll the dough and cut it into finger shapes.

Tip 6: Use Parchment Paper

Using parchment paper is essential when baking almond fingers because it prevents them from sticking to the baking sheet. Furthermore, it helps to ensure that the fingers cook evenly, and it makes clean up a breeze. Grease the parchment paper or use a non-stick cooking spray to make the baking process even easier.

Tip 7: Bake at the Right Temperature

The temperature at which you bake your almond fingers is critical to the final outcome. The fingers need to be baked at a temperature between 325°F to 350°F, depending on the recipe you're using. Baking at the correct temperature will help to ensure that the fingers cook evenly and turn crispy golden brown.

Tip 8: Proper Cooling

Once the almond fingers are baked, it is essential to allow them to cool properly before serving. This will help to ensure that the fingers are firm and hold together nicely. You can cool them either on a wire rack or on the baking sheet itself, however, be careful not to let them sit for too long before you take them off the hot baking sheet.

Tip 9: Dipping in Chocolate

Dipping almond fingers in chocolate is a popular way to enhance their flavor and give them an attractive look. When you're dipping the fingers in chocolate, make sure to use high-quality chocolate that contains at least 60% cocoa solids. You can either dip the fingers entirely in chocolate or dip them halfway to create a decorative design. Let the chocolate cool and firm up before serving.

Tip 10: Experiment with Flavors

Finally, almond fingers recipes provide you with an excellent opportunity to experiment with flavors. You can add different flavors, such as vanilla or almond extract, to enhance the taste of the fingers. Additionally, you can experiment with the type of nuts used in the recipe. For example, you can use a combination of almonds and other nuts such as hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, or pistachios to make the fingers even more delicious.
Conclusion
Creating the perfect almond fingers recipe requires attention to detail and a willingness to experiment with flavors. It is essential to use high-quality ingredients, follow the measurements closely, and use the right tools to achieve the desired result. By incorporating these tips into your almond fingers recipe, you can create a delicious and satisfying dessert that is sure to impress.
