ALL PURPOSE MEXICAN CHILI SEASONING MIX

All Purpose Mexican Chili Seasoning Mix image

I got the original recipe from budget101 but have tweeked it a bit. I have discovered that this seasoning can take the place of many I would have otherwise bought. It is nice to have one thing that does the job of many. I have included several ideas for using this but would love to hear from anyone who comes up with something...

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 c dried parsley
1/3 c dried minced onion
1/4 c dried minced chives
1/3 c chili powder
1/4 c dried cumin
1/4 c salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp ground black pepper
2 Tbsp sugar

Steps:

  • 1. Mix all ingredients and blend well. Store in an air tight container.
  • 2. For tacos: Brown 1 pound of hamburger and drain. Add 2 T. of seasoning, 2 T. of ketchup, and 1/2 cup water. Simmer stirring occasionally until liquid is reduced. Use for nachos, tacos, taco salad, or on hot dogs for chili dogs with cheese and onions.
  • 3. For beans: Sort, rinse, and soak 1 cup of pinto beans. Add to pot with 1 rounded tablespoon of seasoning mix, 3 slices cooked crumbled bacon, and 1 T. of fat or oil. Cover with water. Cook until beans are tender. To make baked beans, add ketchup, brown sugar, and onion to taste. Bake as desired. These beans are so good and the only way I prepare them now!
  • 4. For dip: Add 3 T. mix to 1 cup each of sour cream and mayonaise. If desired add 1 or more of the following: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1/4 c. crumbled cooked bacon, 1 chopped green onion. Refrigerate to blend flavors.
  • 5. For chili: Make mix as for tacos but increase mix to 1 1/2 tablespoons. After making meat, add 1 can of kidney or pinto beans, drained and about 2 cups of low or no sodium tomatoes (I use a pint of home canned). Simmer for about 20 minutes. Tastes even better for lunch the next day!
  • 6. For sloppy joes: Make mix as for tacos but do not cook yet. Add 2-3 T. brown sugar, 2 tsp. mustard, 1 tsp ground horseradish, 2 tsp. worcesterchire sauce and 1/4 cup ketchup. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Serve on buns with pickles, cheese, chopped onions, and mustard. This is good on mashed potatoes too.
  • 7. I have used this to season cooked chicken, beef, and pork for tacos and burritos. I have used it like a rub on grilled meat. It is really good!

All-purpose seasoning mix recipes are an excellent method to add flavor to your dishes without the hassle of mixing spices every time you cook. However, with so many different spice options available, it can be challenging to find the right mixture that will bring out the flavors you're looking for. In this article, we'll explore valuable tips to consider when making all-purpose seasoning mix recipes.

Tips for Making All-Purpose Seasoning Mix Recipes

1. Start with a Simple Base
When making all-purpose seasoning mix recipes, it's crucial to have a simple base that can complement most dishes. Typically, this base would include salt, pepper, garlic, and onion powder. From there, you can add additional spices or herbs that align with the type of cuisine you're cooking.
2. Consider the Color
A seasoning mix should also be visually appealing as it is flavorful- a perfect color combination can add an extra touch to your dish. Darker seasoning will enhance the visual appeal of grilled meats, while lighter seasoning blends can be better suited for roasted vegetables.
3. Pay Attention to the Flavors
When making all-purpose seasoning mix recipes, it's essential to consider the type of flavors you want to incorporate into your dish. For example, if you're looking to add a smoky flavor, you'll need to include smoked paprika, while cumin can add an earthier taste. Experimenting with different spice combinations is a great way to find the flavors you enjoy the most.
4. Matching the Flavor Profiles
In some cases, it can be helpful to match a seasoning mix to a specific flavor profile, such as Mediterranean, Mexican or Indian dishes. This can help create a unique and flavorful blend that pairs well with your meal plan.
5. Be Mindful of the Heat Level
When making all-purpose seasoning mix recipes, you must consider the heat level you want to achieve; remember not everyone likes spicy food. You can add a bit of cayenne pepper or chili powder for spice, but keep in mind that it's always best to start small when doing this.
6. Fresh is Best
Finally, when creating an all-purpose seasoning mix, it's always best to use fresh herbs and spices whenever possible. Freshly ground seasonings create more aroma and flavor than pre-packaged mixes. You can use a pestle and mortar or a spice grinder to create the freshest mix and get the best sensory experience for your dish.

Conclusion

All-purpose seasoning mix recipes can make cooking easier and more enjoyable while adding variety and flavor to your food. Therefore, it's essential to follow these valuable tips to create a flavorful seasoning blend that matches your desired cuisine and perfectly complements your meals.
