Steps:
- First, shape and boil your carrots: Bring a medium pot of water to a rolling boil. Peel the carrots and cut the ends off, so they are able to fit into the bun. We also like to use our peeler to round off the ends of the carrots, making them look more like hot dogs. Add them to the pot and boil for about 10 -15 minutes. The time will vary depending on the thickness of your carrots. When you can easily stick a fork in them (but before they're falling apart), they're ready. Remove carefully with tongs.
- While the carrots boil, make the marinade: In a shallow dish, whisk together all the ingredients. When ready, add your boiled carrots, cover, and set in the fridge to marinate for 24 hours.
- Finally, make and serve: Pull your dogs out of the fridge and heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add a Tbsp of refined coconut oil and allow it to melt (sub veg broth for oil-free). Add your carrots carefully along with 3 Tbsp of the marinade and sauté them for about 5 - 10 minutes, rolling them around often. You want the outsides to get a little charred, so it really looks like a hot dog. Serve your carrot dogs in buns immediately with ALL the toppings!
- Leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. We suggest reheating them in a saute pan, covered, with a Tbsp or two of the marinade.

Steps:
- Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil. Add carrots, cover, and steam until tender yet still have a snap, about 15 minutes. Run cold water over carrots to stop the cooking process. Transfer carrots to a storage container.
- Whisk soy sauce, water, vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and black pepper together in a bowl; pour over carrots. Cover container and refrigerate, at least 3 hours. The longer they marinate, the more intense to flavor.
- Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
- Remove carrots from marinade and place on the grill; cook until desired doneness is reached, 5 to 10 minutes.

ALL NATURAL CARROT DOGS
This sounded just wierd enough to try it. Obviously a carrot is the same shape and close enough in color to make a decent hot dog substitute. But the real question is about the taste. The marinade really takes it to the next level. I think the sesame oil does it, but the vinegar gives it that "cured" flavor too. Adapted from Healthy Slow Cooking.

Steps:
- Fill a pot about half-way full of water, heat it on high until it boils. Turn down to medium heat and add the carrots. Cook until you can just pierce it through with a fork. You want it to still have a snap when you eat it. Run cold water over them to stop them from cooking more.
- Combine the other ingredients to make the marinade. Use a container that has a tight lid so you can easily shake it without spraying it all over your kitchen. Marinate at least 3 to 4 hours, though they are fine for almost 2 days.
- Put the carrots in the container and marinade for a few hours to up to a few days. If you marinate them longer they take on more of the vinegar flavor. If the carrots are very skinny I would not marinade them for more than 1 1/2 days so they don't taste too sour.
- To serve heat the carrots in a 350 degree oven or on in a grill pan on a hot grill until heated through. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Serve in a toasted hot dog bun with your favorite toppings. They're great the southern way topped with chili and cole slaw! Prep these on a weekend and you're ready for a quick weeknight treat.
- You could also cook them in your slow cooker in the marinade. You will need to check on them so they do not get mushy, so it's not an overnight or all day affair. If they get mushy when you re-heat them it will make a mess. Cook until a fork just goes through the carrot, but the carrot is still slightly firm.

All-Natural Carrot Dogs Recipes: A Game-Changing Meat-Free Alternative
If you are a vegetarian or vegan, then you know how frustrating it can be to attend a barbecue or cookout and be limited to just a few side dishes while everyone else is enjoying their hot dogs and hamburgers. But what if we told you that there is a mouth-watering, meat-free alternative to the classic hot dog that will make you feel included and satisfied all summer long? Say hello to the all-natural carrot dog!
You read that right: carrot dogs. This innovative recipe takes a whole carrot and transforms it into a flavorful, juicy, and perfectly textured hot dog that will fool even the most die-hard meat enthusiasts. And the best part? This is a plant-based option that is packed with nutrients and fiber, making it a healthier choice for your body and the environment.
What are all-natural carrot dogs?
Before we dive into the different recipes and cooking methods, let's first talk about what exactly an all-natural carrot dog is. To put it simply, it is a carrot that has been marinated and grilled or roasted to resemble a hot dog in taste and texture. The marinade and toppings are what really bring this dish to life, so we'll discuss those in detail later. But for now, just imagine a juicy, slightly charred, and smoky-sweet carrot that's nestled in a toasted bun and topped with your favorite condiments. Hungry yet?
Why choose all-natural carrot dogs?
Aside from the obvious fact that carrot dogs are a meat-free option that cater to vegetarians and vegans, there are plenty of other reasons to give them a try. Here are a few:
- Healthier: Carrots are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are beneficial for your health. They are also high in fiber, which can help regulate your digestion and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
- More sustainable: Eating plant-based meals is more sustainable for the environment than consuming meat. The production of meat requires more resources, such as land, water, and energy, and it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
- Budget-friendly: Carrots are usually cheaper than meat, so you can save money by opting for a carrot dog instead of a traditional hot dog.
- Tasty: Last but not least, carrot dogs are just plain delicious! With the right seasoning and cooking method, they can rival any meat-based hot dog in flavor and texture.
How to make all-natural carrot dogs
Now that you're convinced to try carrot dogs, let's get into the nitty-gritty of how to make them. There are a few different cooking methods you can choose from, depending on your preference.
- Grilled: To grill your carrot dogs, you'll need to start by peeling your carrots and cutting them to the length of a hot dog. Then you can either marinate them for a few hours or overnight, or brush them with a marinade just before grilling. The marinade can be a simple mixture of soy sauce, liquid smoke, garlic powder, and maple syrup, or you can get creative with different herbs and spices. Grill the carrots over medium-high heat for about 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are slightly charred and tender. Serve them in toasted buns with your favorite toppings.
- Baked: If you don't have a grill or prefer a hands-off cooking method, you can bake your carrot dogs in the oven. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Peel and cut your carrots as you would for grilling, and brush them with a marinade of your choice. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the carrots are tender and lightly browned. Toast your buns and assemble your carrot dogs with your desired toppings.
- Sous-vide: Sous-vide cooking involves sealing your food in a vacuum-sealed bag and cooking it in a precisely controlled water bath. While this method requires some special equipment, it results in perfectly cooked and tender carrot dogs that retain all their flavor and nutrients. To sous-vide your carrot dogs, prepare them as you would for grilling or baking, but instead of cooking them right away, seal them in a bag with your marinade and immerse the bag in a sous-vide water bath set to 183°F for about 1-2 hours. Once they are cooked, you can grill or sear them for a few minutes to add some char and flavor.
Toppings and condiments for all-natural carrot dogs
No hot dog is complete without a variety of toppings and condiments to add flavor and texture. Here are some ideas:
- Ketchup: Classic option for all your condiment needs.
- Mustard: Yellow, Dijon, or spicy – take your pick.
- Relish: Sweet or dill relish can be the perfect addition to a carrot dog.
- Onions: Caramelized or raw, onions are a must-have.
- Peppers: Grilled or sautéed peppers bring a bit of smokiness and flavor to your dog.
- Cheese: If you're not vegan, a slice of your favorite cheese can melt on your dog.
- Pickles: Sliced pickles are a favorite on hot dogs and carrot dogs alike!
Conclusion
All-natural carrot dogs are a delicious and healthy alternative to the traditional hot dog. Whether you grill, bake, or sous-vide them, the result is a savory and satisfying meal that can cater to all dietary needs. With a variety of toppings and condiments, you can customize your carrot dog to your liking and never feel left out at a cookout again. Give them a try this summer and prepare to be amazed!
