GLUTEN-FREE CRISPY CAJUN FISH FILLETS IN THE AIR FRYER

Gluten-Free Crispy Cajun Fish Fillets in the Air Fryer image

Cajun fish fillets made in the air fryer pack just enough heat and are perfectly crispy using gluten-free panko bread crumbs. I serve these as sandwiches on a gluten-free bun with lettuce, tomatoes, tartar sauce, and Cheddar cheese slices. Alternatively, you can skip the bun and serve in lettuce wraps or with a salad.

PLAN/PURCHASE
1 medium piece of white fish, i choose cod
1 - 2 dash(es) hot sauce, i prefer frank's
1 Tbsp olive oil, extra virgin variety
SPICE/BREADING MIX
2 Tbsp cornmeal, fine grind
1 Tbsp flour, all-purpose variety
1 tsp cajun/creole spice mix
OPTIONAL SPICES
1 - 2 pinch paprika
1 - 2 pinch garlic powder
1 - 2 pinch white pepper, freshly ground

Steps:

  • 1. PREP/PREPARE
  • 2. This recipe required an air fryer, or you could substitute a convection oven.
  • 3. I prefer to use my own homemade Cajun/Creole spice mix; however, if I do not have any available, then my store-bought option would be Tony Chachere's. Just remember that most commercial spice mixes are loaded with salt. Here is my version of a good Cajun spice mix, and you can decide how much salt to add: https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/seasoning-mix/spice-essentials-creole-seasoning.html?r=2
  • 4. The actual cook time will be determined by the thickness of your filet. Mine was about 3/4-inch (1.9cm) in thickness and took 17 minutes.
  • 5. If you do a lot of air frying, an almost indispensable chef's tool is a good oil mister.
  • 6. Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • 7. In a small bowl, combine the spice ingredients.
  • 8. Rub both sides of the fish with the hot sauce, then brush on the olive oil.
  • 9. Cover with the spice/breading mix.
  • 10. Lightly brush some oil on the basket of your air fryer (to prevent sticking), then add the filet. Set the temperature to 400 (205c) and cook for 10 minutes.
  • 11. Open the basket, lightly brush the top of the filet with some oil, and gently flip over. Close the air fryer and cook an additional 6 - 7 minutes.
  • 12. PLATE/PRESENT
  • 13. Serve with a great side, like rice, and some tartar sauce. Enjoy.
  • 14. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.

In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips for making air fryer essentials easypeasy Cajun white fish recipes.

Tip 1: Choosing the right fish:

When it comes to making Cajun white fish, choosing the right type of fish is crucial. Any lean fish with a mild flavor will work well for this recipe. Some good options include tilapia, cod, and catfish. It's important to note that firmer fish hold up better during the cooking process.

Tip 2: Seasoning:

The seasoning blend used for Cajun fish can vary depending on personal preference, but a classic Cajun spice mix typically includes ingredients like paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and thyme. To add a little twist on this classic recipe, try adding a little smoke paprika or chili powder to enhance the overall flavors.

Tip 3: Breading:

To ensure a crispy coating on your fish, it's essential to use a breading mix. A typical breading mix includes flour, cornmeal, bread crumbs or a combination of the three. Another tip is to add some spices to the breading mix to enhance the flavor even more.
Pro Tip:
For an even crispier texture, allow the fish to rest for a few minutes after breading to help the mix adhere better to the fish.

Tip 4: Preheating:

Preheating the air fryer is crucial for getting the best results. This ensures that the air fryer is at the right temperature before you start cooking your fish. Depending on your air fryer model, 5 to 10 minutes should be enough time to help preheat the appliance.

Tip 5: Cooking time:

The cooking time of your Cajun white fish will depend on several factors, including the type of fish, the thickness of the fillet and the air fryer model. As a general rule, a fillet that's 1/2 inch thick will take around 8-10 minutes to cook. It's always advisable to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature before serving. For fish, the internal temperature should be around 145°F.
Pro Tip:
Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, as this can cause the fish to cook unevenly.

Tip 6: Serving suggestions:

Cajun white fish is a versatile dish that can be paired with many different side dishes. Some popular options include roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a fresh salad. For an even bolder flavor, drizzle some fresh lemon juice over the cooked fish.
Pro Tip:
For a lighter option, skip the breading process and opt for pan-searing the fish instead for a flavorful, yet healthier way to enjoy your Cajun white fish.
