THIN CRISPY AMISH SUGAR COOKIES

Thin Crispy Amish Sugar Cookies image

Thin & Crispy Amish Sugar Cookies are as rich and buttery as their other half, classic Amish Sugar Cookies. Instead of being soft and puffy, they're crisp and wafer-like. A sprinkling of sugar on top provides a little crunch & crackle too.

MY MOM'S CRISPY SUGAR COOKIES

My Mom's Crispy Sugar Cookies image

These are the sugar cookies my mom used to make when I was little... I admit it's been decades since I've had them, but I found the recipe in her old tin box so I thought I'd share it. I don't think there's anything remarkably special in this recipe, but honestly they are the best sugar cookies I've had! I've tried numerous...

Categories     Cookies

Number Of Ingredients 7

3/4 c shortening
2 c sugar
2 eggs
1/4 milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 c flour
3 tsp baking powder

Steps:

  • 1. Beat the shortening and sugar together until very light and fluffy. Beat the eggs in one at a time, then add the milk and vanilla.
  • 2. Sift together the flour and baking powder. Turn your mixer on low and add the flour mixture a cup at a time to the shortening/sugar mixture, mixing only until just incorporated. Dough will be very stiff. Chill the dough several hours, or even overnight.
  • 3. There are two ways to finish these cookies. You can roll out portions of the dough (keep remaining dough chilled), use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes, place on parchment lined baking sheets and bake at 325 until they just start to brown at the edges. Cool slightly, then remove to a rack to finish cooling. You can also just make balls out of the dough, then flatten them with a glass dipped in sugar. You will need to flatten them a LOT, they need to be pretty thin, maybe 1/4 inch. Sprinkle the cookies with regular or colored sugar before baking, if desired.

SUGAR COOKIES (LIGHT & CRISP)

Sugar Cookies (Light & Crisp) image

These Sugar Cookies are marvelous! Light, Crispy, Yummy and so easy. I got this recipe from a co-worker many years ago. Dieters beware--it is hard to eat just one. Tip-I have tried to substitute margarine in place of the butter, and the cookies were not as good. I have also used colored sugars for dipping the glass into for the holidays and that worked very well. Not recommended for rolled out cookies as the dough is too delicate.

ANNE'S BASIC SUGAR COOKIES

Anne's Basic Sugar Cookies image

A quick sugar cookie recipe is a lifesaver during the holidays... or on any day. And this method is so simple, I'm a little embarrassed to call it a recipe. It's what you do with it that counts. Roll and cut into your favorite shapes. Or roll balls in coarse sugar before baking. Form the dough into a log, then slice and bake. Turn them into snickerdoodles by adding cinnamon to the sugar. Or give these cookies a completely new look by folding in sprinkles before baking. The possibilities are limitless! Store, lightly covered, at room temperature, for 1 week.

Time 1h15m

Yield 16

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (15.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled to room temperature
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon almond extract
1 large egg white
sugar sprinkles for decorating

Steps:

  • Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Combine cake mix, butter, egg, vanilla, and almond extract in a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Stop the machine and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Increase the mixer speed to medium and beat until the mixture comes together into a sticky ball, 30 to 45 seconds.
  • Roll the dough to 1/4- to 1/2-inch thickness on a lightly floured board with a lightly floured rolling pin. Use cookie cutters to stamp out shapes and place them 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. (You can reroll the dough scraps once and cut out more cookies.) Brush the cookies with egg white and decorate with sprinkles.
  • Place one pan in the oven at a time. Bake until the edges of the cookies are golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes for smaller cookies and 10 to 12 minutes for larger. Let the cookies rest on the cookie sheet for 1 minute, then remove to wire racks with a metal spatula to cool completely, about 20 minutes.

Agnes Sugar Cookies are a classic treat that has been around for generations. These buttery, sweet, thin, and crispy cookies are an absolute delight to have with a cup of tea or coffee. Although the recipe for Agnes Sugar Cookies is easy to make, there are certain tips and tricks that can be implemented to create the perfect cookie.

Ingredients

The ingredients required for Agnes Sugar Cookies are pretty basic, and are usually found in most households. You will need:
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • Granulated white sugar
  • Egg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Milk (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).
Step 2: Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt
In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This will aerate the dry ingredients and make the cookies lighter.
Step 3: Cream the butter and sugar
In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated white sugar until light and fluffy. This can be done with an electric mixer or by hand.
Step 4: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract
Add in the egg and vanilla extract and beat until well combined.
Step 5: Gradually add the dry ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and mix until just combined. You don't want to overmix the dough as it can become tough.
Step 6: Add milk (optional)
At this point, if your dough feels too dry, you can add a tablespoon or two of milk to bring it together.
Step 7: Roll out the dough
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a thickness of about ¼ inch (0.6 cm). It's essential to roll out the dough evenly to ensure that the cookies bake evenly.
Step 8: Cut out the cookies
Using a cookie cutter, cut out the cookies into your desired shape. Make sure to leave some room between the cookies on the baking sheet as they will spread slightly during baking.
Step 9: Bake the cookies
Bake the cookies for about 12-15 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden brown. Keep an eye on the cookies, as they can quickly over-bake and become hard and crispy.
Step 10: Cool and store
Once the cookies are done, transfer them to a wire rack to cool. Once cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

Tips and tricks

  • Make sure the butter is at room temperature before you start baking. This will make it easier to cream the butter and sugar together.
  • Refined sugar is recommended to use in this recipe as it gives a smooth texture to the cookies.
  • Make sure to sift the dry ingredients, so there are no clumps in the dough.
  • Do not overmix the dough as it can result in tough cookies.
  • Avoid using too much flour when rolling out the dough. Excessive flour can make the cookies dry and tough.
  • Use a silicone baking mat or parchment paper to line the baking sheet, as it will prevent the cookies from sticking to the sheet.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh and crispy for a more extended period.

Conclusion

Agnes Sugar Cookies are a classic treat that is easy to make and can be enjoyed all year round. These thin and crispy cookies are the perfect accompaniment to a warm cup of tea or coffee. Follow the simple recipe and tips above, and you will have delicious, buttery, and crispy cookies that everyone will enjoy.

In this article, we'll discuss the ingredients, methods, and tricks you can use to make the perfect thin and crispy Agnes sugar cookies.

Ingredients

The ingredients you use for your sugar cookies can make all the difference in the final product. Here are the key ingredients you'll need for thin and crispy Agnes sugar cookies:
Butter:
To achieve thin and crispy sugar cookies, you'll want to use unsalted butter. Salted butter will make your cookies too soft and chewy. You also want to make sure your butter is at room temperature before mixing.
Sugar:
Granulated sugar is recommended for Agnes sugar cookies. Using powdered sugar or brown sugar can result in a different texture and flavor.
Egg:
One large egg is sufficient for a batch of Agnes sugar cookies. Be sure to mix the egg in thoroughly with the butter and sugar to create a smooth mixture.
Flour:
All-purpose flour should be used for this recipe. If you use an alternative such as almond or coconut flour, the cookies may not turn out as thin and crispy.
Baking Powder:
Baking powder is an essential ingredient for Agnes sugar cookies. It helps the cookies to rise and stay slightly fluffy while still remaining thin and crispy.
Salt:
A small amount of salt is necessary to bring out the flavors of the sugar and other ingredients.

Methods

Now that we've covered the ingredients, let's talk about the methods you'll need to use to make your Agnes sugar cookies thin and crispy.
1. Preheat your oven:
It's crucial to have a preheated oven to ensure that your cookies cook evenly. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) before starting.
2. Cream the butter and sugar:
Creaming the butter and sugar is a critical step in achieving thin and crispy Agnes sugar cookies. You'll want to use a mixer to blend the unsalted butter and granulated sugar together until they are light and fluffy. This step usually takes around two to three minutes.
3. Mix in the egg:
Once the butter and sugar mixture is light and fluffy, add in one large egg. Mix until the egg is incorporated thoroughly.
4. Add flour, baking powder, and salt:
Gradually add in the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix the ingredients together until you have a smooth mixture.
5. Roll out the dough:
The key to thin and crispy Agnes sugar cookies is to roll out the dough thinly. Divide the dough into two or three sections and roll each section out to around 1/4-inch thickness.
6. Cut out shapes:
Use cookie cutters of your choice to cut out various shapes from the dough.
7. Place on baking sheets:
Line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats. Place the cookie shapes onto the baking sheets, leaving around 1-2 inches between each cookie.
8. Bake:
Bake the cookies at 375°F (190°C) for around 9-12 minutes. Ensure they are golden brown and allow them to cool before removing them from the baking sheets.

Tricks

Here are some tricks you can use to make your Agnes sugar cookies extra thin and crispy:
1. Thickness matters:
Roll your dough out as thinly as possible to achieve thin and crispy cookies.
2. Use a silicone mat:
Silicone mats are excellent for baking as they decrease the chances of the cookies sticking to the baking sheets.
3. Use a lower oven temperature:
Baking cookies at a lower oven temperature can result in them slowly cooking and becoming thin and crispy.
4. Chill the dough:
Chilling the dough for around 30 minutes before rolling it out can help it hold its shape better, resulting in thinner and crispier cookies.
5. Use a light hand:
Avoid over-mixing the dough as it can lead to tougher and chewier cookies.

Conclusion

Thin and crispy Agnes sugar cookies are a classic treat that is perfect for any occasion. With the right ingredients, methods, and tricks, you can make cookies that are easy to make and delicious to eat. So, go ahead and put these tips to use, and enjoy delightful thin and crispy Agnes sugar cookies with friends and family.
