Authentic Fairy Bread - Hagelslag image

Fairy bread is what Australians call buttered bread full of sprinkles, usually served at a kids' party. Apparently there are some recipes using fancy kinds of bread cut into cute shapes and gourmet butter, plus unusual sprinkles. This hilarious version is from a Huffpost article a few years ago. Too funny not to save!! It turns out that the Dutch folks have their very own version, called Hagelslag. My East-friesan mother used to butter pumpernickel bread and sprinkle on white sugar - I never realized that this treat was regional !

Number Of Ingredients 3

- the cheapest, lightest, most nutritionally void loaf of white bread you can find (or a hearty variety works, too!)
- generic brand butter, salted or unsalted, it doesn't matter
- 100s and 1000s (nonpareil sprinkles) (or chocolate sprinkles) (or white sugar)

Steps:

  • Slather the butter a few centimetres thick onto the slices of bread. Cut off the crusts if you like. Make sure you spread the butter all the way to the crusts -- you want those 100s and 1000s to stick real good.
  • Sprinkle the sugar generously onto the buttered bread, making sure there are no gaps.
  • Eat fairy bread until you feel sick!!!!
